He is a syncretic (union or combination) deity, viz the son of Lord Shiva and the female avatar of Lord Vishnu called Mohini. Ayyappan is also known as Ayyappa, Sastavu, Hariharasuthan, Manikanda, Shastha or Dharma Shasta. The iconography of Ayyappa depicts him as a yogi god and as an epitome of Dharma.
He is also called 'Manikanda' from the words 'Mani' (meaning in Sanskrit- precious stone) and 'Kanda' (Sanskrit meaning- neck). Ayyappan is known as Hariharaputra (Hariharasuthan)– meaning 'the son of Harihara (Hari and Hara, the names given to Vishnu and Shiva respectively). In the Hindu pantheon, his legends are relatively recent but diverse.
For some, he is also an incarnation of Buddha or Dharma Shastha. The word Shasta was first used in the sense of a Hindu deity in South India during the 3rd century. He is identified with many deities like Aiyanar, Ayyappa, Guruswamy etc.

He is honored by some Muslims in Kerala, with legends wherein Ayyappan defeats and gains worship of the Muslim brigand Vavar. In the Hindu tradition popular in the Western Ghats of India, he was born with the powers of Shiva and Vishnu as a warrior hero raised by a childless royal couple of Pandala kingdom and grows up as a warrior yogi champion of ethical and dharmic living, to confront and defeat a shape shifting evil Buffalo demoness called Mahishi. The life legends and mythology of Ayyappa varies across region like other Hindu gods and goddesses, reflecting a tradition that evolved and enriched over time, sometimes in conflicting ways. For example, the Sribhuthanatha Purana presents Ayyappan as an incarnation of the brahmanical deity Hariharaputra, the son of Shiva and Mohini. This interaction between Shiva and Mohini is mentioned in the Bhagavata Purana, but nothing about Ayyappan is found. The word Aiyappan is not found in South Indian versions of the medieval era Puranas.
The words Sastha and Dharmasastha in the sense of a Hindu god are found in the Puranas. Ayyappan may probably emerged from the Puranic story of Shiva and Mohini's sexual interaction.
The alternate theory links it to the Malayali word 'achchan' and Tamil word 'appa' which means 'father', which Ayyappan connoting 'Lord Father'. The word Shastha (Sastha or Shasthavu) is a Vedic term that means Teacher, Guide, Lord, Ruler etc. In this sense, Dharmasastha means Teacher of Dharma (eternal law). It is to be noted that although Aiyappan and Aiyanar are incarnations of Sastha, there are large difference between them just like- although Rama and Krishna are incarnations of Vishnu, they are different. The major difference between them are- Ayyappan is a celibate (person who abstains from marriage and sexual relations), while Ayyanar is grihastha and has two wives named Poorna and Pushkalai.
Aiyanar rides on Horse and white elephant, while Aiyappan rides on Horse and Tiger. In Kerala, Ayyappan is worshiped in Sabarimala Temple while Ayyanar is worshiped in Achankovil Sri Dharmasastha Temple. However, due to the fact that Ayyappan and Ayyanar, both are incarnations of Sastha, the difference between them narrowed in the course of history. Tamil devotees did not discriminate Ayyappan with Ayyanar and they believe that Ayyappan is the avatar of Ayyanar. It can be noted that Sri Lankan Ayyanar temples are being converted into Ayyappan temples following the outbreak of Sabarimala pilgrimage of Sri Lankan devotees in recent years.
